Are Routine Check-Ups for Men Really Necessary?

First off the answer to, “Are Routine Check-Ups for Men Really Necessary?” is yes. The obstacles to get men into the doctors for a check-up  can be endless, anything from busy schedule , to lack of funds or insurance, and the oh so common, “I feel fine.” Below is a simple list, based on guidelines developed by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the U.S. Preventative Health Task Force. They are guidelines for how often you should get routine check-ups by your health care provider.

One of the many questions being asked about medical care these days is whether the routine check-up really keeps you healthy.

The value of check-ups and their frequency depends mainly on your age and gender. Your personal and family medical history are also important.

The following exams, measurements and lab tests help identify treatable problems early. For many medical conditions, early treatment can help prevent more serious problems.

If you have any ongoing health problems you will probably need to see your provider more often. These schedules should be used for “well care.”

In addition to seeing the health care provider regularly, you should try to maintain your weight at a comfortable, health level and do frequent physical activity or get regular exercise.

The recommendations listed below are based on guidelines developed by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the U.S. Preventative Health Task Force. They are guidelines for how often you should get routine check-ups by your health care provider: Continue reading

Laughing is a reaction to certain stimuli. Traditionally, it is considered a visual expression of happiness, or an inward feeling of joy. It may ensue from hearing a joke, being tickled, or other stimuli.

Laughter is a part of human behavior regulated by the brain, helping humans clarify their intentions insocial interaction and providing an emotional context to conversations.  Laughter is used as a signal for being part of a group — it signals acceptance and positive interactions with others. Laughter is sometimes seen as contagious, and the laughter of one person can itself provoke laughter from others as a positive feedback. This may account in part for the popularity of laugh tracks in situation comedy television shows.

Laughter is anatomically caused by the epiglottis constricting the larynx.

The study of humor and laughter, and its psychological and physiological effects on the human body, is called gelotology.

Exercise May Protect Against Erectile Dysfunction

Does really mean, if  you don’t use it your lose it?

The study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, assessed the association between physical activity and erectile function in young, healthy men ages 18 to 40. Previous studies have suggested that erectile dysfunction in men under 40 is correlated with increased cardiovascular risks.

“The men in our study who exercised more seemed to experience a protective benefit against erectile dysfunction,” says Wayland Hsiao, MD, co-author of the study and assistant professor of urology at the Emory University School of Medicine.

“We hope that early screening for ED may be a gateway issue to help motivate young men to live healthily on a consistent basis so that they can possibly avoid health issues associated with a sedentary lifestyle, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We see this as just the beginning.”

Study participants self-administered two surveys: the Paffenbarger Physical Activity Questionnaire and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF).

The Paffenburger Physical Activity Questionnaire translates patient-reported physical activity into weekly energy expenditure to determine whether a participant is sedentary or active. The IIEF is a 15-question survey for the measurement of erectile function.

The study reported improved erectile function in men under 40 with increased exercise, as well as higher rates of sexual dysfunction in sedentary men under 40.

“Several studies have evaluated the relationship between exercise and erectile function in older or obese men,” says study co-author Chad W.M. Ritenour, MD, director of the Emory’s Men’s Health Center and associate professor of urology.

“Our goal with this particular study was to determine if there is a connection between increased exercise and better erectile function in younger men.” (www.futurity.org)

Oral HPV More Common in Men Than Women

By ANAHAD O’CONNOR

About one in 15 Americans is infected with oral human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted virus that causes throat cancers, and the disease is especially common among men, new research shows.

The research is the first major study to document the nationwide prevalence of oral human papillomavirus, or HPV, a disease that has drawn growing attention from public health experts because it has fueled a rise in oropharyngeal cancers affecting the back of the tongue and the throat. Researchers showed last year that throat cancers caused by a particular strain of the virus, HPV Type 16, have tripled in the last 20 years. But it was unclear exactly how many people over all were carrying HPV, which exists in more than 40 forms. Continue reading

SFO Yoga Room: Terminal Two Introduces A Zen Zone (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

This could be the ultimate challenge for you Yogis. At an airport do you really want to let your guard all the way down? Yoga, is about letting go, detaching from the world around you and being present in the moment. If I walked out of a yoga class at the airport, I would totally lose my luggage and be too Zened out to make my connecting flights in time. LOVE the idea though. VIDEO

Here’s an “only in San Francisco” story for you. The San Francisco International Airport is set to open a “Zen Room” for travelers who want to do a little yoga before catching a flight out of town.

Airport Director John Martin officially opens the facility inside Terminal 2 Thursday.

It will be available to ticketed passengers who feel the need to meditate, stretch, or do whatever else one might do to get Zen-like before a flight.

If you are looking for a little downward dog before you catch a plane out of town, the room is in Terminal 2 past security next to the “recompose area.”  It is marked “Yoga Room” and has a big glass door.

And believe it or not, the room is open to all for free. There is no charge to use the Zen Room.

Of course, you don’t need a special facility to do yoga. All you need is a little space and a mat.

But if you’d like to do it in private, or in the company of other yoga lovers, you now have that option at SFO.

To assist travelers in f inding the room, signs have been place throughout the airport showing a person in the Lotus position.

Be Smart About Your Coffee and Use Caffeine to Power Your Workout

No truer words have ever been spoken. Some folks (me) live, breath and sleep with coffee. No joke sleep. I have heard of several individuals you can drink coffee and go right to sleep. Coffee when used correctly can be a powerful life tool. It shouldn’t be your end all to hunger, thirst, mood altering and more.

Everyone gets that feeling of lethargy during the day where they just can’t seem to muster enough energy to focus on the tasks at hand. The first inclination is to pump your body with an excess amount of caffeine to get you motivated. But if you do that hours before a workout, however, you may be hurting your performance and endurance. Continue reading
